What Is a Graphic Designer?
A designer in today's society must possess a high standard of professionalism. He or she must have patience and humility. Ethical conduct, integrity and respect for others are a must. Additionally, Graphic Designers must be adaptable to client's needs, while helping the client to find what those needs are. It is possible for a client to think they know what they need and and still not understand the best solution for their message. It is the duty of the designer to help the client recognize the ever changing needs of their audience. Because of this, a designer needs to be a people person, understanding both the needs of the client and their audience.
According to the book, "The Complete Graphic Designer," art and graphic design do not fall into the same category. I disagree. While it is true that Fine art is usually self-serving, and Graphic Design is created for a client with specific needs, I believe Fine art and Graphic Design come together whenever the combination of text and image are used to evoke an emotional response from a viewer. My personal definition of Fine art and Graphic Design are often interchanging. Fine art is visually communicating a message to a viewer while evoking an emotional response. Graphic Design is only Graphic Design, when the intention of the creator is simply to inform the viewer.
Graphic Design has evolved with the human race since cave dwellings. It continues to evolve today. Pushing the boundaries is essential for good design. Everyone wants to see something new while connecting with something familiar. In the next ten years I imagine designs to continue to "walk the penumbra" of the already lopsided yin and yang, Pushing the boundaries of acceptable and inappropriate. In addition to this I see designs becoming less and less tangible. With the use of the internet and cell phones the need for the poster will be gone. It is more likely that blue-tooth technology will evolve into "blue-eye" technology. We will all be micro-chipped like our pets with the capability to see visual messages hands free.
As a designer with a strong moral ethic, I need to prepare myself with patience and nonjudgmental tolerance of the will and beliefs of others around me, while remembering where I came from. In doing so, I will be able to more clearly see, and understand how to purposefully navigate where I will go as a designer of the future. It is my hope that in my walk along the penumbra, I will be able to push the boundaries in a new innovative direction, back into balance.
